In San Diego, Rise Up Industries is aiding people who have recently been released from prison in securing jobs within the defense manufacturing sector, which is projected to experience growing demand in the coming years. The nonprofit, which began its program in 2016, focuses on teaching individuals how to operate advanced precision tooling machines that produce parts utilized across various industries, including military hardware and consumer goods.
During a recent visit to Rise Up, Anthony Watson, a 57-year-old former inmate, shared his experience. After serving 27 years, Watson now operates machinery as part of an 18-month program. He aspires to enhance his skills further, aiming for a future in which he can also support at-risk youth. Rise Up graduates are finding success, with many securing jobs in a field that anticipates needing hundreds of thousands of new skilled workers in the near future.
