California is in dire need of increased housing, and funding is critical to achieving this goal. Proposition 1 aims to empower the state by allowing it to borrow $11.25 billion specifically for housing initiatives.
If approved, the majority of the funds—$7.2 billion—will be allocated for purchasing, constructing, or renovating apartment complexes, with a requirement to set aside units for low-income families. Additionally, the proposed measure would enhance housing options for veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness, renters, homeowners, farmworkers, students, and tribal communities.
According to the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office, this initiative could assist in realizing up to 40,000 rental units, particularly supportive housing for the homeless. The associated cost to the state for servicing the bond could reach up to $600 million annually for 25 years, drawing some criticism for increasing state debt.
