San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria addresses trash billing errors, flooding risks and ongoing budget deficit

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Mayor Todd Gloria of San Diego is tackling various pressing concerns affecting the city, including recent errors in trash billing, measures being taken in light of El Niño flooding, and the status of the city’s ongoing budget deficit. In an interview with ABC 10News, Gloria acknowledged the billing mistakes that have drawn criticism from residents and city council members, labeling the errors as unacceptable. He emphasized that the issue was detected before any paper bills were distributed and assured that corrected bills would be sent out in collaboration with the county.

Furthermore, the billing situation has ignited discussions among council members about the need for reinstating a chief operating officer for daily operations, a responsibility currently held by the mayor after eliminating the city manager role in 2025. In relation to flooding, Gloria confirmed the city’s preparedness and highlighted lessons learned from the severe floods of 2024, focusing on the importance of communication and coordination. He also provided insights into the financial state of the city, noting a decrease in the budget deficit from about $300 million last year to approximately $120 million this year. The mayor plans to unveil a five-year financial outlook in November.
