Before dawn at Mission Bay, San Diego Police began knocking on the doors of illegally parked RVs, giving occupants the option to move to H-Barracks or face a $173 ticket. Sgt. Michael Wallace observed a larger-than-usual presence of RVs, noting that the area receives the highest complaints regarding parking violations.
Under the city’s Oversized Vehicle Ordinance, parking RVs on city streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. is prohibited, aimed at alleviating safety concerns. Officers encounter between 50 to 75 RVs each night, and while some occupants are on vacation, others are facing hardship. For those accepting a referral to H-Barracks, there’s an opportunity to access various support services without incurring a fine. Despite challenges, Wallace indicated that even minor interactions can be a meaningful first step toward change, as they continue these efforts to address the growing RV parking issue.
