A man from San Diego, Isaac Jimenez, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for participating in a scheme that held migrants captive and demanded ransom from their families, which resulted in at least two migrants being missing and presumed deceased.
Jimenez was involved with a Tijuana-based trafficking group that misled individuals seeking to enter the United States, leading to abductions instead. Prosecutors stated that in September 2024, he collected $15,000 from the family of one victim, later linked to further demands for ransom. Additionally, Jimenez coordinated the smuggling of a young woman in December 2024, who was also kidnapped, with her family facing threats from her captors. Although he did not directly abduct the individuals, he acknowledged the outcomes of their crises, agreeing to pay restitution for funeral costs related to the victims.
