The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation has been awarded a grant of $990,102 to replace the unstable wooden steps on the South Fortuna Steps trail, commonly referred to by hikers as the “Stairway to Heaven.” The funding, approved by the governing board of the San Diego River Conservancy, aims to enhance safety and sustainability on this heavily trafficked path, which attracts over 60,000 hikers each year.
In response to years of wear from heavy use, severe weather, and erosion, which have caused significant degradation of the existing wooden staircase, the project will replace approximately 630 linear feet of steps with natural stone. This initiative also includes drainage improvements, new trail signage, and the restoration of areas affected by trail widening, which has negatively impacted local vegetation. Work will proceed with considerations for wildlife, ensuring minimal disruption during the bird nesting season.
