The average cost of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County fell for the ninth consecutive day on Saturday, dropping by 1 cent to reach $6.343 per gallon.
This decrease marks a total decline of 8.4 cents over the past nine days, including a 2 cent drop on Friday, as reported by the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. This trend follows a series of 42 price increases in 44 days that amounted to 74.5 cents, pushing the average price close to its record level.
Currently, the average price is 7.2 cents lower than it was a week ago, but it remains 34.8 cents higher than a month ago and $1.56 more than this time last year. Prices surged by $1.657 since the escalation of conflict in the region beginning February 28, which caused a rise in oil prices and intensified fuel cost increases.
The peak average price in San Diego County, $6.434, was recorded on October 5, 2022. The recent decline is attributed to Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to allow the sale of cheaper winter-blend gasoline ahead of the traditional November 1 date.
Kandace Redd, a senior public affairs specialist at the Automobile Club of Southern California, indicated that wholesale gasoline prices in Los Angeles have significantly decreased following the early switch to winter blend, suggesting further reductions at the pump may be on the horizon.
On a national scale, the average gasoline price also saw a reduction of half a cent to $4.366, marking its 13th decrease over the last 15 days. This national figure is 1.4 cents lower than last week, yet remains 8.9 cents higher than a month prior and $1.266 up from a year ago.
