Guillermo del Toro’s acclaimed film, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’ celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and is set to return to cinemas. To commemorate this milestone, I’m revisiting interviews with del Toro from the Cinema Junkie archives and providing a fresh perspective on the film. Del Toro, during 2006, chose to leave Hollywood after directing ‘Blade II’ and ‘Hellboy’ to pursue a more personal project, which led to the creation of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’ a tale set against the backdrop of post-Civil War Spain.
The narrative follows a young girl, Ofelia, coping with her cruel stepfather, Captain Vidal, and escaping into a dark fairy tale. Del Toro stated the film addresses themes of choice and disobedience, which he believes remain significant today, highlighted by political events occurring during its release. With its mixture of horror and fantasy, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ not only reflects del Toro’s experiences but also challenges viewers to consider the moral implications of their choices.
