College Area residents fear developer is steering library future, want city – or mayor – to step up

A recent community meeting in the College Area highlighted residents’ concerns about the future of the College-Rolando Branch Library, their only local public space, amidst a significant construction project. The meeting was held in a union hall due to blocked access to the library’s entrance and reduced parking availability, issues that residents have faced since construction began in September.

Lindsay Rodriguez, an advocate for preserving library access, expressed frustration that developers were influencing decisions about the space. Jan Hintzman, a long-time library supporter, discussed the reduced parking availability post-construction, as only 25 spots would be returned to library patrons after the development opens. City library director Misty Jones emphasized constraints, noting budget cuts that limit her department’s capacity to enhance library services. Community members proposed several solutions to improve access, but their calls for help were compounded by the absence of representatives from the mayor’s office and the proposing developer during the meeting.
