The charm of San Diego’s roadside motor lodges stemmed from a straightforward concept: drivers would arrive, park easily, and stay close to the roadway. This convenience transformed areas like Mission Valley, San Ysidro, Pacific Beach, Carlsbad, and Oceanside during the 1950s and 1960s. However, these motels did not remain unchanged over the decades. Some were leveled, while others were rejuvenated, renamed, or repurposed into housing.
For instance, the Rancho 101 Motel, established on the site of a former racetrack, blended remnants of its past with the motel era. In contrast, establishments like the Gateway Inn evolved from tourist lodgings to low-income housing before being demolished in 2017. As the landscape of roadside motels shifted, properties like the Scandia Motel were renovated, whereas others, such as the Surf Motel, were replaced by new developments.
